‘Apadawata Pera Sudanama’ a cleaning programme initiated to reduce flood risk caused by the overflowing of Malwathu Oya in Anuradhapura was held under the patronage of the President His Excellency, Maithripala Sirisena at the German Bridge of Anuradhapura yesterday (07th July). The programme which is being conducted under the close supervision of the Ministry of Disaster Management is well assisted by the tri-services and Civil Security Department with their manpower. This timely initiative was augmented by a team of 50 naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command with boats and other cleaning gear required for the effort. Accordingly the Navy’s teams are expected to remove unwanted layers of mud and salvinia plants collected at the Malwathu Oya, hampering the free flow of water. Further the efforts will extend to widening of the river banks, erection of side walls to strengthen the river banks in flood risk areas and related measures, as part of this programme.
