14 persons held by Navy for engaging in illegal acts
Sri Lanka Navy assisted to apprehend 14 persons engaged in illegal acts at various locations in the island during the past few days. These suspects were held for engaging in illegal fishing and possession of explosive.
Accordingly, Naval personnel attached to the North Western Naval Command on foot patrol along beach line in Daluwa area apprehended 02 persons who possessed banned nets, on 15th June. A banned net was taken into Naval custody and the suspects along with the net were handed over to Fisheries Inspector-Puttalam for onward action.
A troop of Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command apprehended four persons (04) who engaged in illegal fishing activities in Vidathalative beach area on last 19th June. Illegal catchment of Sea Cucumber 33 in number and a Wallam (traditional craft) were also nabbed and they along with the suspects were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector-Vedathalative for legal proceedings.
Further on the same day, three persons who engaged in illegal fishing had been nabbed by the Naval troops attached to the North Central Naval Command. Along with the persons a dinghy and a banned net were also taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons, dinghy and net were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector -Mannar for legal action.
A troop of Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command on foot patrol in lagoon area Batticoloa recovered a banned net on last 19th June and it was handed over to Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee for necessary legal action.
Meanwhile, Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command apprehended 05 persons who were practicing illegal fishing in Nilaweli area, on 20th June. There, 23 Kg of caught fish, two dinghies, 03 banned nets, 10 Gelignite sticks, 04 Non electrical detonators and 04 Safety fuse were also nabbed. The suspects, dinghy, nabbed stock of fish and other gears were handed over to Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee for necessary legal action.
Two banned nets were taken into Naval custody during a raid carried out by Naval personnel attached to Eastern Naval Command with the assistance of Fisheries Inspector-Trincomlee, on 20th June. The nets were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee for onward legal action.
Further, a parcel of Kerala Cannabis (weighing 28.37 Kg) found during a beach cleaning campaign round the Delft island conducted by Naval personnel attached to Northern Naval Command with the assistance of general public, was handed over to Delft Police for further investigation.
