Navy engaged in lagoon cleaning programme to coincide with National Environment Week
The National Environment Week from 30th May to 05th June has been declared to mark the World Environment Day that falls on 5th June this year. With the intention of ensuring a pristine environment for the future generation, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) had organized a cleaning programme in the lagoon area of Negombo, which was assisted by the Sri Lanka Navy.
Further, over 700 persons including the Army and Air Force personnel, university students, officials from the Central Environmental Authority, Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, Divisional Secretariat Negombo, Ministry of Fisheries, other government and private sector along with the members of Fishermen’s Union took part in this effort and they managed to remove a heap of polythene, plastic and other nondegradable pollutants from the lagoon area.
The programme was also attended by the Director General of the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, Mr. Gamini Hewage, the Divisional Secretary of Negombo, Mr. Alawatta, the Chairman of MEPA, Rear Admiral (Retired) PADR Perera, its Deputy General Manager - Operations, Commander MAJ Priyantha and a host of officials.
