Navy nabs 36 persons for engaging in illegal activities
Navy apprehended 36 persons engaged in illegal activities during the last couple of days across the country. Accordingly, they were held by the Navy for engaging in illegal fishing and transporting foreign liquor by illegal means.
Naval personnel attached to a the Northwestern Naval Command, during routine patrol, apprehended 11 persons engaged in illegal fishing in the sea area of Kudiramalei on 11 April 2018. Along with the suspects 2 dinghies, 9 unauthorized fishing nets and 373 kg of illegally caught fish were also seized by the Navy. The apprehended persons, dinghies, fish and fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Puttalam for onward action.
Meanwhile, naval personnel onboard Inshore Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command, during routine patrol, held 24 persons for practicing illegal fishing in the eastern sea area. Four dinghies, 4 unauthorized fishing nets and 2,149 kg of illegally caught fish were also taken into naval custody during the apprehension. The apprehended suspects, dinghies, fish and other fishing items were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Trincomalee for onward legal action.
On receipt of information to the Navy, naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command in coordination with STF personnel of Seeduwa apprehended a person with 60 bottles of foreign liquor during a raid conducted in Colombo 07 on 11 April 2018. The arrest was made while the liquor bottles were being transported to sell by a motor car. The suspect has been identified as a resident of Colombo 05. The suspect along with the bottles of foreign liquor was handed over to the Police Station of Cinnamon Gardens for onward legal action.
