Navy foils gold smuggling attempt, 3 persons apprehended with 24.2 kg of gold
On receipt of information to the Navy, naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command apprehended 3 Sri Lankan nationals attempting to smuggle 24.2 kg of gold from the country via sea. Accordingly, the apprehension was made in the seas north of Mannar yesterday (11 April 2018).
It is believed that the 242 gold biscuits, each weighing 100g, are worth approximately Rs. 170 million. During the apprehension, a dinghy used for the smuggling purpose was also seized by the Navy. The apprehended persons, stock of gold, dinghy and other equipment were handed over to the Jaffna Customs Office for onward legal action.
