Navy thrust into action, clump of bamboo trees removed from Polathumodara river
 

Naval personnel attached to the Southern Naval Command were thrust into action to remove a huge clump of bamboo trees that restricted downstream of water in Polathumodara river flowing in the proximity of Addara Wellana road in Imaduwa, Galle. Naval troops were engaged in the mission over the last couple of days and they finally managed to restore the free flow of water.

A clump of over 200 bamboo trees had clogged across the river posing a threat of inundation in Kodagoda locality. Following information disseminated by the Divisional Secretary of this contingency situation, several groups of naval personnel were dispatched to the location under the directives of Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna. Accordingly, naval personnel belonging to the Special Boat Squadron and Navy’s Diving Unit in the Southern Naval Command had been deployed for the execution of the task.

Naval troops engaged in the strenuous task of removing the clump for 4 consecutive days even utilizing backhoe loaders. The entire process had to be executed to perfection as the river is home to lurking crocodiles. Besides, several clumps of bamboo tress, on the river bank, that posed a potential danger were also removed for swift downstream of water.
