Seven arrested for engaging in illegal activities
Navy arrested 7 persons for engaging in various illegal acts at different locations in the island over the last few days. The suspects had engaged in illegal fishing activities and possessed narcotics including intoxicating drugs and Kerala cannabis when these arrests were made.
Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command apprehended 03 persons who engaged in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets in the sea area south of Mannar on 22 November. Along with the persons, a dinghy and 02 unauthorized fishing nets were also taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons and fishing items were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Mannar for further investigations.
Based on intelligence information, naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command in coordination with Madurankuliya Police nabbed a person with 2.25 kg of Mawa (betel nut mixed with cannabis) and a tin of lime mixed tobacco in Madurankuliya locality on 23 November. The suspect and narcotics were handed over to the Mundalama Police for onward action.
On receipt of an intelligence tip-off to the Navy, naval troops attached to the Eastern Naval Command together with the officials attached to SSP Trincomalee Division arrested 02 persons with 2.200 kg of Kerala cannabis, during a raid conducted in Allas Guarden, Trincomalee on 24 November. The arrest was made while the suspects were transferring the consignment to sell. The two persons and cannabis were handed over to the Uppuweli Police for onward legal action.
Following intelligence information, naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command in coordination with Negombo Police apprehended a suspect with 10 tablets of Tramadol and 4 g of Kerala cannabis. The raid was carried out in Bolawalana on 25 November, to arrest the suspect when he was transferring the illegal drugs to sell. The apprehended suspect together with the tablets of Tramadol and Kerala cannabis was handed over to the Negombo Police for further action.
