Navy arrests 16 persons engaged in illegal activities
 

The Navy took into custody 16 persons who had been involved in illegal activities at several locations in the island. Accordingly, 13 persons engaged in illegal fishing, 2 suspects for keeping Kerala Cannabis and tablets of Tramadol in their possession, a suspect with Madana Modaka (aphrodisiacs) and an abandoned consignment of Kerala Cannabis were apprehended by the Navy.

Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command arrested 13 persons for engaging in illegal fishing practices using unauthorized fishing nets in the seas off Pigeon Island on 04 October. Along with the suspects, 2 dinghies and 2 unauthorized fishing nets were also taken into naval custody. The arrested persons and their fishing gear were handed over to the Wild Life Authority in Nilaweli for onward action.

On receipt of intelligence information, a group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command in coordination with Walachchanai Police apprehended 2 suspects with 18 tablets of Tamadol and 16 g of Kerala Cannabis during a raid carried out in Walachchanai locality on 06 October. The seized tablets and cannabis were handed over to the Walachchanai Police Station.

Based on information received to the Coast Guard Station Mirissa, naval personnel attached to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard together with the officials of STF took a suspect into custody for selling Madana Modaka. During a search carried out in Kamburugamuwa region the suspect was arrested along with 100 madana modaka pills. The suspect and the madana modaka pills were produced in Kotavila Police for further legal action.

Meanwhile, naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command managed to recover 82 kg of Kerala Cannabis, based on intelligence information received to the Navy on 06 October in Uchchamunai area. The consignment of cannabis was recovered during a search carried out in Keeramundalam and Uchchamunai region. The seized consignment of cannabis was handed over to the Kalpitiya Police for onward action.
