SLNS Rangalla celebrates its 50th anniversary on “Rangalla Day”

SLNS Rangalla celebrated its 50th anniversary on “Rangalla Day” with a host of activities befitting its Golden Jubilee today (08 September 2017). A Division Inspection followed by the Commanding Officer Captain Senaka Seneviratne’s address to the ship’s complement marked the commencement of the celebrations. A sumptuous Barakana (the traditional dinner), graced by the Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle, was also partaken by all ranks and rates in keeping with naval customs. A colourful musical show is also scheduled to be held in the evening to provide a fitting finale to the event.

SLNS Rangalla is one of the oldest naval bases in the Sri Lanka Navy. It was established on 08 September 1967 with Lieutenant Commander HP Paulis as its Commanding Officer. The naval establishment, which has had 67 Commanding Officers to date, plays a pivotal role in protecting Sri Lanka’s economic nerve centre, the Colombo harbour. The base had initially functioned near JCT/ St. Anthony’s Gate (Gate No. 04) and was subsequently shifted to the present location.

SLNS Rangalla has also played a prominent role in providing disaster relief assistance and restoring infrastructure facilities in the areas affected by recent floods and earth slips.
