Foundation stone laid for new Directorate of Naval Design Complex

The foundation stone was laid for the new office complex of the newly-established Directorate of Naval Design by the Director General Engineering, Commodore Ravindra  Ranasinghe on 16th August 2017 at the Welisara Naval Complex. The office complex will enable the new directorate, which is established in accordance with the Commander of the Navy’s vision to modernize the naval fleet, to lead the ship design dimensions of the Sri Lanka Navy.

In order to achieve a modernized fleet, the foremost requirement is to have a strong ship design department, which not only performs the design part of it, but also plays the role of the advisor or the mediator between the Navy and the ship builder when construction is outsourced while finalizing the critical aspects of hull design, ship systems, machinery and auxiliaries to be on par with Sri Lanka Navy standards. In line with the modernization of the naval fleet, capacity development of naval personnel in ship design aspects will, therefore, be given high priory by the newly-established directorate.

The Director Hull Engineering Commodore Jagath Siriwardene, the Commodore Superintendent Logistics Department (West) Commodore Nihal Bandara and a host of senior and junior naval officers were also present on the occasion.
