SL Navy – Indian Coast Guard facilitate repatriation of 02 Sri Lankan fishermen
 

Sri Lankan Navy today (09, August), facilitated the repatriation of 02 Sri Lankan fishermen arrested by the Indian Coast Guard for trespassing into Indian territorial waters. The repatriation came off as a gesture of goodwill between the two neighbouring countries.

A Fast Attack Craft attached to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard received the repatriated fishermen at the IMBL off Kankesanthurei from the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Ayush’ and provided close escort to Kankesanthurei. Thereupon, the fishermen were handed over to the Jaffna Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward action.

The two fishermen had ventured out to sea for fishing from the Point Pedro fisheries harbour and were arrested by the Indian Coast Guard on 20^th May, for trespassing into the Indian territorial waters.

Meanwhile, to signify the camaraderie between India and Sri Lanka, 77 Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lankan custody for poaching in the island’s territorial waters, were repatriated to India on 03^rd August.
