SLN achievers of 02nd South Asian Veteran Table Tennis Tournament meet with Commander of the Navy
The naval personnel who recorded a number of achievements at the 02nd South Asian Veteran Table Tennis Tournament, met with the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne at the Naval Headquarters today (July, 24). After being congratulated by the Commander of the Navy for their impressive victories at the tournament, the winners were also presented with special prizes in recognition of their performances. The occasion was also attended by the Secretary of Navy Table Tennis pool, Captain Anil Bowatte.
The tournament was held at the Indoor Stadium of St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia from 20th to 23rd July 2017. Representing the Sri Lanka Navy, 2 teams of over 40 year age category and a team of over 50 year age category took part in the tournament.
Ordinary Seaman PDIP Silva became the champion of the over 40 year men’s single event and it remained to be the only gold medal won by a Sri Lankan athlete in the tournament. Meanwhile, Ordinary Seaman PDIP Silva and Master Chief Petty Officer GLD Prasanna were the runners up in over 40 years men’s double team event, winning the silver medal. Further, Captain Pujitha Vithana, Lieutenant Prasad Silva, Master Chief Petty Officer GLD Prasanna and Ordinary Seaman PDIP Silva secured the bronze medal, in team event.
The tournament was attended by 226 competitors from countries like India, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the naval table tennis athletes dominated the medals tally by securing the highest number of medals among the Sri Lankan participants.
