The Sri Lanka Navy has been implementing a wide range of community development projects under the visionary leadership of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne. Installation of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in areas prone to kidney disease is one of the many such magnanimous projects undertaken by the Sri Lanka Navy. Making progressive strides with this effort, another two (2) RO plants were declared open at SLNS Mahanaga in Panama and Naval Deployment  Kirinda today (July,11).

The new installation of naval base Mahanaga is capable of providing safe drinking water for 1354 naval personnel and ND Kirinda is for 62 naval personnel. Financial allocation for this project was made by the Navy.

Following a visionary concept of the Commander of the Navy, Sri Lanka Navy Research and Development Unit has been playing an instrumental role in devising these systems making use of their technological knowledge and expertise, for prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease. Incidentally, the Navy has successfully installed a total of 230 RO facilities across the country to date, facilitating over 107,510 families and 80,185 school children with safe drinking water.

Further, the Navy will continue its community development and social responsibility projects while setting up more RO plants in areas where high prevalence of kidney disease is recorded in the country.
