Navy installs an Ultra Purified Water plant at Dialysis and Kidney Transplant Unit of Kandy Teaching Hospital
 

Sri Lanka Navy has been implementing an array of Community Development and Social Responsibility projects under the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne. Going by this noble initiative, the second Ultra Purified Water plant produced by the Navy’s Research and Development Unit was installed at the Dialysis and Kidney Transplant Unit of Kandy Teaching Hospital yesterday (30, June). The facility can produce 10 tons of Ultra Purified Water in a single day, required for the dialysis process.

Navy’s Research and Development Unit has produced this system utilizing their technological innovations and expertise, under the able guidance of the Commander of the Navy. The market price of this Ultra Purified Water plant is estimated to be Rs. 13 million. However the Navy’s Research and Development Unit had produced this unit at relatively low cost, incurring only Rs. 1.7 m.

The purified water processed through this unit, has been awarded the Association of Advanced Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) certification and it has received high praise and recognition from the Kidney specialists of the Teaching Hospital Kandy. Further, the Navy’s Research and Development Unit produced this system within a short time period of a month and stainless steel equipment and materials of the highest quality have been used for its production.

This significant feat is another monumental achievement of the Sri Lanka Navy in empowering the national programme of Kidney Disease Prevention. Besides, the Research and Development Unit of the Navy is determined to install similar facilities at every hospital that possesses dialysis units. Up to now, the Navy has installed a total of 223 RO plants throughout the country and facilitates the civilian population with safe drinking water. This magnanimous effort of the Sri Lanka Navy operated by the Navy’s Research and Development Unit, under the visionary leadership of the Commander of the Navy has received high local and international recognition, as it is making every endeavour to create a healthy community.
