Navy renders assistance to clean-up water course in Kotte

Sri Lanka Navy yesterday (June, 27) rendered assistance to clean-up a water course near Beddagana soccer ground in Kotte. The water course had drainage issues as it was clogged with mud, garbage and salvinia following the prevailing heavy rains.

As a result of the stagnant water, the area smelt unpleasant and was prone to diseases. Upon being alerted, the Navy undertook cleaning work of the canal, deploying a group of 50 naval personnel.

An excavator of the Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (LRDC) was also used for the cleaning task of this 3 km long water stream.

In the aftermath of the inclement weather condition and subsequent flash floods prevailed in the country in recent times, free flowing of many water courses was severely hampered. Even if the water level gradually receded, the communities faced a number of hardships due to stagnant water ways.

As per the able guidance and directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, the Navy undertook the cleaning of water courses and canals to avert possible flood situation that could be triggered following the heavy down pouring in coming months. This cleaning effort is carried out as part of yet another Social Responsibility Project of the Sri Lanka Navy.
