Ayagama Bridge vested in the public in Rathnapura
The ‘Welamiriya Suspension Bridge’ which sustained damages inflicted by the recent flash floods, was reconstructed and ceremonially declared open for the community use by the Navy, today (June, 16) in Ayagama. The bride is located at Kavittigoda belonging to the MedagalakuraGramaNiladhari Division in Ayagama, Rathnapura.
Following the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral RavindraWijegunaratne, the Navy undertook the complete reconstruction work of the bridge which is 38m in length, utilizing its man power and completed construction work within short span of 13 days (from 03rd to 15th June). The bridge is over ‘Galathure River’ which is a branch of ‘River Kalu’.
The public in the region conveyed their gratitude for the generous support extended by the naval personnel of Shipwright and Civil Engineering branches and all naval personnel who contributed in this magnanimous effort, under the able leadership of the Commander of the Navy. The Navy is determined to continue its social responsibility projects in a bid to assist desperate communities across the country, in due course.
Director General Engineering, Rear Admiral NilanthaPremasiri declared open the reconstructed bridge and a host of naval officers, religious dignitaries and a large number of residents were also present on the occasion.
