Navy renders assistance to clean several canals in Kelaniya
Following the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, a team of naval personnel carried out a preliminary study to find out regions in Kelaniya area that could pose a flood threat during heavy downpour in the following months.
During the discussions held with the Divisional Secretary (DS) – Kelaniya, Mrs. Pubudika Bandara and DS staff in this regard, the officials pointed out the Navy several canal sites which could pose a flood threat as the sites are clogged with garbage and salvinia hampering the free flowing of water.
Accordingly, the Navy yesterday (1) rendered assistance to clean the Meegahawatta Canal, Weerasinghe Mawatha Cannel, Thelanga Paatha Cannel and Dharmaloka Cannel as the water courses had drainage issues for being clogged with mud, garbage and salvinia, in Kelaniya locality. As a result of the stagnant water, the sites smelt unpleasant and posed possible threat of spreading diseases. The Navy undertook clean-up work of the canals deploying over 75 naval personnel.
An excavator of the Land Reclamation and Development Corporation and 3 dinghies of the Navy have been utilized in this effort that ultimately helped swift downstream of water along the canals.
