Navy renders assistance to clean Meegahawatta canal

Sri Lanka Navy rendered assistance to clean the Meegahawatta canal flowing in close proximity to the Peliyagoda Highway entrance. The water course had drainage issues as it was clogged with mud, garbage and salvinia following the adverse weather condition.

As a result of the stagnant water, the area smelt unpleasant and it was vulnerable to diseases. Upon being alerted, the Navy undertook cleanup work of the canal yesterday (31). Accordingly, two teams comprising 5 officers and 70 naval personnel have been engaging in the cleaning task until today (1).

Accordingly, an excavator of the Land Reclamation and Development Corporation and 3 dinghies of the Navy have been utilized in this effort. The canal which is leading to the River Kelani from the close proximity of Peliyagoda Highway entrance, measures 2 km in length and 60 m in width.
