Third Indian Naval Ship reaches Port of Colombo carrying relief materials
 

Indian Naval Ship (INS) ‘Jalashwa’ arrived at the port of Colombo today (30) to assist in relief operations for the community hard hit by the adverse weather in the island nation. The ship is the third consecutive Indian naval vessel to arrive in Sri Lanka over the past three days, loaded with relief materials. The ship is commanded by Captain TV Sunil.

Moreover, the 6 small craft aboard ‘Jalashwa’ would also be utilized in augmenting ongoing disaster relief operations. The ship’s crew consists of 341 naval personnel including 33 officers. Three (3) medical teams and 4 lifesaving teams are also on-board together with a large consignment of essential commodities such as; dry ration, bottles of drinking water, makeshift shelters and medicine.

Secretary to the President, PB Abeykoon with his spouse, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, H.E. Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle, Director General Operation, Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva, officers from the Naval Headquarters, Defence Attaché to the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka, Captain Ashok Rao and a host of government officials were present on the occasion to receive the ship.

This ship visit is yet another proven example for the longstanding ties of camaraderie and mutual relationship between the neighbouring countries and their navies, Besides, the Indian Naval Ship ‘Kirch’ and ‘Shardul’ arrived in Sri Lanka on 27th and 28th respectively, with humanitarian assistance and other aid as soon as this unfortunate situation came to light.
