Navy commences operation to repair and clear two bridges in Matara
In the aftermath of the adverse weather and flood havoc, a number of damages have been inflicted on bridges in 2 localities of Matara district. Rising swiftly to the contingency situation, the Navy directed several teams of Special Boat Squadron (SBS) and Marine personnel to address these eventualities.
Accordingly, a group of 36 Naval Marine personnel had been deployed for a special operation to clear the debris trapped under the Mahapothuwila bridge located in Siyambalagoda, Matara district. The bridge that combines eastern and western parts of Siyambalagoda area, had been clogged with a large amount of debris and logs, towards the lower end, obstructing the water drainage. As soon as the situation was brought to the notice of the Navy, a team of Naval Marines was rushed to the location for immediate clearance of the debris and they toiled tirelessly for the swift downstream of water. The Mahapothuwila bridge is located 12 km away from Pitabeddara, Matara, over Urubokka Aru River.
Meanwhile, the Kuruwatta bridge in Pitabeddara, Matara has sustained severe damages following the flash floods hit in the region. Incidentally, the Navy had directed a team consisting 37 SBS personnel to undertake repair work to the bridge. The repair work is underway as of now.
