Colombo Supercross 2017 flagged off at the Navy’s gravel track in Welisara
Colombo Supercross 2017, the inaugural motor sports event organized by the Sri Lanka Navy in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR), was flagged of on a successful note today (07) at the motocross and gravel track in Welisara. At the invitation of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Before the commencement of the series of racing events, the Commander of the Navy officially declared open the racing tracks setting the platform ready for an exciting day of racing.
The ace drivers and riders, who took part in this event across from the country reverberated their engines at this purpose built motocross track in hot pursuit of coveted honour. Befittingly, 125 racing riders and 85 drivers, displaying thrilling performance, enthralled the cheering spectators who gathered in numbers to catch the glimpse of the champion drivers and riders in the country. The maiden motocross endeavour saw a total of 22 motorcar and motorcycle events being conducted in respective categories (12 motorcars and 10 motorcycles) where the cream of the drivers and riders of Sri Lanka showcased their breath-taking skills in the moto-racing fraternity.
Bringing great credit to the Navy, the following riders secured respective places unfolding their best performances on the gravel tracks in front of cheering crowds.

This significant occasion was also attended by; Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe, Deputy Chief of Staff and Commandant of the Volunteer Naval Force, Rear Admiral Neil Rosayro, Director General Operations, Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle, officials of the SLARDAR, officers, sailors and a large number of spectators.
The Colombo Supercross is conducted with the aim of utilizing the profits made for the welfare of the families of Navy war heroes killed in action during the ethnic war and also to offer facilities and scholarships to their children.
