Three Reverse Osmosis plants bestowed on community

The Sri Lanka Navy has been implementing a wide range of community service projects under the able leadership of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne. The installation of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in kidney prone areas is one of the many such noble projects undertaken by the Sri Lanka Navy. Following this noble cause, three more RO plants installed at the village of Nedunkulama in Vavuniya, Orubendiwewa Central College and Dharmapala Primary School in Badulla were declared open for community use yesterday (23).

The facility at the village of Nedunkulama is capable of producing clean drinking water for 420 families in the area. Meanwhile, the RO system installed at Orubendiwewa Central College will facilitate 140 teachers and 1,830 school children with safe drinking water. In the similar vein 14 staff members, 140 school children and 250 families in the region will be benefited by the RO plant set up at the Dharmapala Primary School. The financial provisions for these RO systems were made by the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease and they were produced and installed making use of the expertise of the Navy’s Research and Development Unit.

The Naval Civil Engineers constructed the compartment in which the RO system is safely housed, at the village of Nedunkulama and the project was carefully supervised by the Commander North Central Naval Area, Rear Admiral Merril Wickramasinghe.

Consequently, the Navy has successfully installed a total of 167 RO facilities across the country to date, facilitating over 79,255 families and 62,124 school children with safe drinking water. Further, the Navy is determined to set up more RO plants in due course.
