Nine Reverse Osmosis plants declared open for community use
 

Nine more Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants produced by the Navy’s Research and Development Unit following a visionary concept of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, declared open for community use in the districts of Anuradhapura, Jaffna and Polonnaruwa recently.

Accordingly, the facilities were installed and declared open at; Elapathgama Sri Sobhitha Viharaya in Mahawilachchiya under financial provisions of the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease, two RO systems at Janakapura Rajamaha Viharaya in Sampathnuwara and Sripura Parana Medawachchiya Ranmaduwa Rajamaha Viharaya in Padaviya under the sponsorship of Ministry of Buddhasasana, three facilities at Karagahawewa Viharaya in Thalawa, Poonewa Maha Vidyalaya and village of Keeramalei with allocations made by Sri Lanka Navy’s Social Responsibility Fund, another facility at Aralaganvila under financial contribution of Sports Club of Sri Lanka Customs and two more installations at Bulankulama and Pahalagama in Nuwaragam Pradeshiya Sabha under the sponsorship of North Central Local Government.

Commander North Central Naval Area, Rear Admiral Merril Wickramasnghe attended the RO plant opening ceremony held at Poonewa Maha Vidyalaya. The facility will provide safe drinking water for 1,216 school children and 345 families in the region. The occasion was also attended by senior officers, the principal and staff of the school and large number of locals.

Meanwhile, the rest of the installations can provide safe drinking water for 450 families in Elapathgama, 470 families in Janakapura, 320 families in the area and Buddhist monks at Sripura Parana Medawachchiya Ranmaduwa Rajamaha Viharaya, 50 families in Keeramalei, 580 families in Aralaganvila, 500 families in the region together with Buddhist monks at Karagahawewa Viharaya, 490 families in Bulankulama and 520 families in Pahalagama respectively.

Utilizing their expertise and technological know-how, the Sri Lanka Navy’s Research and Development Unit produced all these Reverse Osmosis plants. Incidentally, the Navy has successfully installed a total of 162 RO facilities across the country to date, facilitating over 76,925 families and 60,000 school children with safe drinking water provided free of charge. Further, the Navy is determined and will continue to set up more RO plants in due course.
