Navy installs an Ultra Purified Water plant at Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplant Unit in National Hospital, Colombo
Yet another community service project of the Sri Lanka Navy, operated with the noble intention of making a healthy community for all, came to a successful end today (3). Accordingly, an Ultra Purified Water plant produced by the Navy’s Research and Development Unit, was installed at the Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplant Unit in National Hospital, Colombo. The facility can produce 10 tons of Ultra Purified Water in a single day, required for the dialysis process.
As per the request made by the Deputy Director General of the National Hospital, Dr. Anil Jasinghe and following the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne this facility was installed at the hospital premises. The market price of this Ultra Purified Water plant is estimated to be Rs. 4-8 m. However the Navy’s Research and Development Unit had produced this unit at relatively low cost, incurring only Rs. 2 m.
For the water processed through this unit, has been awarded the Association of Advanced Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) certification and it has received high praise and recognition from the nephrologist of the National Hospital. Further, the Navy’s Research and Development Unit produced this system within a short time period of six months and stainless steel equipment and materials of the highest quality have been used for its production.
This significant feat is yet another achievement of the Sri Lanka Navy in empowering the national programme of Kidney Disease Prevention. Besides, the Research and Development Unit of the Navy is determined to install 4 similar facilities at the Anuradhapura, Dambulla, Kurunegala and Puttalam Government hospitals as well. The Navy had installed a total of 124 RO plants throughout the country and facilitate the civilian population with safe drinking water to date.
