Ten Indian fishermen arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters
Sri Lanka Navy arrested 10 Indian fishermen who were poaching in Sri Lankan waters, at two separate locations yesterday (7). Accordingly, 4 Indian fishermen along with a fishing trawler, engaged in illegal fishing activities, were apprehended by the Naval personnel attached to SLNS Thammanna located in Talaimannar belonging to the North Central Naval Command, in the sea area North of Talaimannar. The apprehended persons and trawler were handed over to the Directorate of Fisheries, Mannar for onward action.
On the same day, Naval personnel attached to SLNS Elara located in Karainagar in the Northern Naval Command apprehended another 6 Indian fishermen who were poaching in the sea area North of the Delft Island. Along with the suspects; a fishing trawler and two unauthorized fishing nets were also taken into custody. Upon bringing the apprehended fishermen and items to the Naval Base SLNS Elara, they were handed over to the Jaffna Fisheries Director for further investigation.
