Newly constructed Boat Yard and renovated Area Stores Complex declared open in Naval Dockyard Trimcomalee
The Commander Eastern Naval Area and Flag Officer Commanding Naval Fleet, Rear Admiral Travis Sinniah declared open the newly constructed Boat Yard of the Diving and Salvage Unit in the Naval Dockyard Trimcomalee on 5th January 2017. Fulfilling a long felt need of such a facility, the construction work of the new Boat Yard commenced under the guidance of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, in parallel with the 50th Anniversary Programme of the Diving and Salvage Unit.
The foundation stone for the Boat Yard was laid by the Commander of the Navy and Lieutenant Commander (Retd) T Somasundaram who was the first Diving Officer of the Navy, on 26th October 2015 marking the 50th Anniversary of the Diving & Salvage Unit. This Boat Yard is comprised of a maintenance yard, OBM section and a fuel storage compartment.
Meanwhile, the Area Stores Complex in the Eastern Command, on completion of some major renovations and some structural changes, was also declared open by the Commander Eastern Naval Area on the same day.
