Navy Ball 2016 held on grand note in Colombo
 

Blended in with time honoured customs and traditions, the Navy is also an exciting place where its men get plenty of opportunities for socialization and lavish entertainment. Accordingly, yet another signature event of the Sri Lanka Navy, The Navy Ball – 2016, was held at the Western Naval Command Wardroom at SLNS Rangalla yesterday (23), symbolizing the traditions and modernity of the sea going arm of Sri Lanka.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi graced this flamboyant evening as the Chief Guest at the invitation of Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne and Mrs. Yamuna Wijegunaratne. The occasion was made even more colourful with the graceful presence of Chief of Defence Staff, Commander of the Air Force, senior officers from the tri-forces along with their spouses.

The Navy being the silent servant of the Island Nation, expects its officers to be gentlemen and ladies of refined manner and punctilious courtesy. The maintenance of its traditions is a tremendous force, forming the "Esprit-de-corps", which is an integral part of the service life. Going by such traditions, this year’s Navy Ball kicked off under the theme “Rock on Deck”, allowing the gentlemen and ladies in blue to socialize and keep their toes tapping and make their bodies move to scintillating music.

Furnishing the distinguished gathering with rich naval traditions, the Ceremonial Sun Set and Posting of Flags transpired next adding more glamour and grace to this mega social gathering. Besides, the tempo of the gests of the evening was set high with the vibrant music and sizzling dance performances of the Navy Band and Dancing Troupe.

The selection of the Navy Queen also took centre stage in the line-up of events at the event. Miss Kavindya Perera, the daughter of Rear Admiral (retd) Rohana Perera was adjudged as the Navy Queen 2016. She was crowned by Mrs. Yamuna Wijegunaratne, the beloved wife of the Commander of the Navy, and the winning sash was clad by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence.
