Two more Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants declared open for community use

Following a visionary concept of His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena and as part of the Sri Lanka Navy’s community service programmes carried out under the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, two more Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants installed at Vavuniya Police station and Kokawewa village in Galenbindunuwewa, were declared open for community use yesterday (20).

Accordingly, the RO system set up at Vavuniya Police station was ceremonially declared open by the Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Hon. Dr Rajitha Senaratne. Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Commander of the Navy, Project Director of Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease, Mr. Asela Iddawela, Commander North Central Naval Area, Rear Admiral Merril Wickramasinghe, Senior Superintendent of Police of Vavuniya Division, Mr. Deshabanu Tennakoon, senior officers, dignitaries and a host of residents were also present on the occasion.

The two installations are capable of providing safe drinking water for over 500 police personnel attached to Vavuniya Police, civilian population in the area and 490 families in Kokawewa village respectively. The compartments, in which the RO systems are housed, were constructed by the naval Civil Engineers under the supervision of Commander North Central Naval Area. The financial provision for the two RO systems, was made by the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Kidney Diseases, while its construction was undertaken by Sri Lanka Navy’s Research and Development Unit. Accordingly they had installed 54 Reverse Osmosis facilities across the country to date.
