Commander of the Navy confers gallantry medals on 72 naval War Heroes
Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne conferred gallantry medals on 72 naval personnel during a ceremony held at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake Auditorium of Naval Headquarters today (9).
At the commencement of the ceremony a two-minute silence was observed in honour of the service personnel who had made the supreme sacrifice in the defence of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland.
During the gallantry medal awarding ceremony, one officer was conferred with ‘Rana Wickrama Padakkama’ (RWP) and 71 more naval personnel including officers and sailors received ‘Rana Sura Padakkama’ (RSP) medals for their gallantry and acts of bravery.
‘Rana Wickrama Padakkama’ is awarded as a reward for individual or associated acts of bravery in the face of the enemy that performed voluntarily. ‘Rana Sura Padakkama’ is awarded as regard for individual acts of distinguished conduct in the face of the enemy.
The occasion was attended by Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe, Deputy Chief of Staff and Commandant Volunteer Naval Headquarters Rear Admiral Neil Rosyro, Area Commanders, Director Generals, a host of senior officers from the Naval Headquarters and family members of the War Heroes.
