Twenty-eighth Midshipmen of 54th Cadet Intake pass out at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee
 

Twenty-eighth (28) Midshipmen belonging to the 54th Cadet Entry Intake were commissioned at a graceful commissioning parade held at the main Parade Ground of the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee this evening (30). On successful completion of their dedicated training, the Midshipmen passed through the portals of the Navy’s premier training establishment, being commissioned in the rank of Acting Sub Lieutenant. State Minister of Defence Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and took the salute at the invitation of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene emphasised that the responsibility lies with the newly commissioned officers is of paramount importance as they are the prospective guardians of the motherland. Also he urged young officers to inculcate discipline, leadership, professional competency and other attributes essential to be a commissioned naval officer and meet future challenges with confidence. Reminding of the great legacy and long-standing traditions of the Sri Lanka Navy and its officers, the State Minister of Defence encouraged young blooded officers to follow in the footsteps of distinguished naval officers to mould their naval careers.

Venerable Maha Sangha, clergies from other religions, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Sirimewan Ranasinghe, Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Travis Sinniah, Director Generals, Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy, Commodore Rohitha Perera, senior officers from the tri-forces and Police and parents of newly commissioned officers were also present on the occasion.

Those who excelled during training were presented with special awards in recognition of their outstanding performances. Accordingly, Midshipman MPH Perera was conferred with the Sword of Honour, having been adjudged the Best Midshipman. Midshipman WAG Kaushalya won the awards presented for the highest aggregate in nautical subjects and Best Sportsman. Midshipman SJMTM Samarakoon received the awards for the highest aggregate in overall subjects and highest aggregate in professional subjects and Midshipman KADKD Kodikara won the award for the Best Marksman.

The glittering ceremony culminated with the dazzling cultural performance presented by the Navy Cultural Troupe and a band display of the Navy band followed by a colourful sunset.
