Commander of the Navy participates in the Environmental Conference and National Tree Planting Programme
 

The Environmental Conference and initiative of planting one billion ‘Ginisiriya’ plants in parallel with the ‘Wanaropa’ National Tree Planting Programme were held under the auspices of His Excellency the President, Hon. Maithripala Sirisena in Trincomalee yesterday (21).

H.E. the President set the tone of this year’s tree planting programme by planting a sapling of ebony in Kanthale forest reserve. The tri-service, Police, Civil Security Force personnel and school children also join this worthy cause by planting 2,000 tree saplings in an area of 2 hectares. The event was attended by Venerable Maha Sangha, clergies from other religions, Opposition Leader, Hon. R Sampanthan, Minister, Hon. Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Deputy Ministers; Hon. Anurdha Jayarathne and Hon. Susantha Punchinilame, Governor of the Eastern Province, Hon. Austion Fernando, Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, Hon. Nazir Ahamed, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne and crowds of general public. Incidentally, Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Travis Sinniah was awarded with a certificate by H.E. the President, in recognition of the contribution made by the Eastern Naval Command for a clean green environment.
