Navy nabs 9 local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing activities
 

Naval personnel apprehended 9 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing practices using unauthorised nets, at two separate locations yesterday (3). Accordingly, naval personnel attached to SLNS Gotabhaya located in Mullaitivu belonging to the Eastern Naval Command, arrested 8 fishermen engaged in illegal fishing activities in the seas off Kokilai. During the arrest, 3 dinghies and an unauthorised fishing net were taken into naval custody. The arrested persons and items were handed over to Mullaitivu Police for further actions.

On the same day, another fisherman who practiced illegal fishing by means of an unauthorised fishing net, in the sea area off Kannankudah, was arrested by the naval personnel attached to SLNS Kashyapa located in Vakarai in the same naval command. The apprehended fisherman and fishing net were produced to Batticaloa Directorate of Fisheries for onward investigations.
