Navy offers another Reverse Osmosis plant for community use in Galenbindunuwewa
Acting upon the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, the Sri Lanka Navy has been implementing a number of community service programmes focusing on the civilian population. As part of one such initiatives, a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant installed at Sri Uthpalaramaya, Upuldeniya in Galenbindunuwewa was offered to community use today (1). The new installation is capable of providing safe drinking water for 300 families in the area and 350 children of Upuldeniya Vidyalaya.
The financial provision for the RO system, was provided by the Galle Face Hotel while its construction was undertaken by Sri Lanka Navy’s Research and Development Unit. Realizing the grave need for having more Reverse Osmosis plants in areas which are prone to Chronic Interstitial Nephritis, Sri Lanka Navy’s Research and Development Unit is very much instrumental in developing more RO systems for the use of needy people. Accordingly they had installed 30 Reverse Osmosis facilities across the country to date. Further, the Navy had initiated a timely progrmme to make the general public aware of Chronic Interstitial Nephritis in Agricultural Communities (CINAC) to coincide with the installation of RO plants.
