A Reverse Osmosis plant is declared open in Eppawala
Implementing yet another community service programme of the Sri Lanka Navy, a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant was installed in the school premises of Sri Siddhartha Central College in Eppawala, Anuradhapura, considering the intolerable levels of hardship faced by the students of the school and residents in the area. Accordingly the newly installed RO system was declared open by Commander North Central Naval Area, Commodore Merril Wickramasinghe today (26).
Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne turned his attention to the safe drinking water crisis faced by the residents of the area as the bund of the Eppawala Reservoir got damaged due to bad weather prevailed in the area. As a result, this new RO system was set up with the intention of providing safe drinking water to the children of Sri Siddhartha Central College and residents in and around the area. The facility is capable to quench the thirst of over 4,000 students and teachers of the school and 300 families in the area. The ceremony was attended by the Venerable Maha Sangha, senior and junior officers from the North Central Naval Command, principal, staff, and children of Sri Siddhartha Central College and residents.
The Sri Lanka Navy’s Research and Development Unit had utilized their expertise and technical know-how to build and install 27 RO plants across the country thus far, providing safe drinking water for over 10,000 school children and 16,000 families. Further, 4 similar systems are to be set up at the Bhiksu University in Anuradhapura tomorrow (27) and University of Jaffna on 2nd October 2016.
