Navy apprehends 12 local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing
 

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Gajaba located in Mannar in the North Central Naval Command arrested 12 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities using monofilament nets in the sea area off Kondampiddi yesterday (21). Along with the suspects, 2 dinghies and 2 monofilament nets were taken into naval custody. The apprehended fishermen and belongings were handed over to the Mannar Assistant Director of Fisheries for further investigations.

On the same day, another 10 fishermen who were engaged in illegal fishing practices by means of unauthorized nets in the seas off Kokkilai, were apprehended by naval personnel attached to SLNS Gotabhaya located in Mullaitivu in the Eastern Naval Command. During the arrest, 3 dinghies and 2 unauthorized nets used for fishing were taken into naval custody. The arrested persons and the items were produced to the Mullaitivu Police for onward investigations.
