Navy nabs 3 fishermen engaged in illegal fishing activities
Naval personnel apprehended 3 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing practices at two separate locations yesterday (5). Accordingly, naval personnel attached to SLNS Kashyapa located in Vakarei belonging to the Eastern Naval Command, arrested 2 fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities using monofilament nets in the seas off Kaththankudi. During the arrest, 19 monofilament nets were taken into naval custody. The arrested persons and the items were handed over to the Batticaloa Fisheries Inspector for onward investigations.
On the same day, another fisherman engaged in illegal fishing practices using unauthorized nets in the sea area off Waleipadu, was apprehended by the naval personnel attached to SLNS Buwaneka located in Nachchikuda in the North Central Naval Command. Along with the fisherman, a monofilament net was taken into custody by the Navy. The arrested person and fishing net were produced to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for further actions.
