His Excellency the President Chief Guest at the Closing Ceremony of Defence Services Games – 2016
The Defence Services Games – 2016 which is organized biennially in view of honing the sporting talents of tri-service sportsmen and women came to an exciting finish at the New Gymnasium of Panagoda Army Camp yesterday (22). His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena graced this colourful occasion as the Chief Guest and distributed prizes among the winning service personnel.
The Sri Lanka Navy became the runners-up in this year’s games which was held for the 9th time in its history. The Defence Services Games – 2016 which was declared open on 24th March this year, was attended by a number of tri-force sportsmen and women in vide spectrum of sporting disciplines. The tournament comprised 35 men’s and women’s sport events in which the Navy athletes managed to secure 16 titles winning 95 Gold, 81 Silver and 120 Bronze medals respectively.
State Minister of Defence, Hon. Ruwan Wijayawardane, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunathilake, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunatatne, Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala and a large number of invitees attended this event.
