First Poppy Flower presented to Commander of the Navy
 

Launching their poppy campaign today (4), the President of  Sri Lanka Naval Association, Captain (Rtd) DA Wijegunawardena presented the first poppy flower to Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne at the Naval Headquarters.

The poppy with its crimson colour signifying the bloodshed in the battlefield is regarded as a symbol of remembrance. It was originally adopted to honour the war heroes who sacrificed their lives during World War I. Today it is used to signify the supreme sacrifices made by the heroic military personnel in the defence of the Motherland with true spirit of patriotism and, the proceeds from poppy sales are channeled for the welfare of their dependents as a tribute.
