Two Indian Naval Ships arrive at the Port of Colombo with relief material for people displaced by floods
As a result of the request made by His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena from the Indian Prime Minister Hon. Narendra Modi, two Indian Naval Ships, INS Sutlej and INS Sunayna arrived at the Port of Colombo today (21) with essential commodities to provide the much-needed relief measures for the people affected by extreme weather. The ships were ceremonially welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in accordance with naval traditions on their arrival.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Harsha De Silva, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Chitranganee Wagiswara, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Mr. Y.K. Sinha, Director General Operations, Rear Admiral Dharmendra Wettewa, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Jayantha De Silva and officers of the Naval Headquarters, were also present on the occasion.
The ships embarked from the Port of Cochin yesterday (20) carrying essentials like food, medicine, makeshift shelters and other consumable stores as part of the relief materials. The prompt assistance rendered by the Indian Government at this moment of need will further strengthen the age-old ties between the two neighbouring countries. On completion of this magnanimous gesture the two Indian Naval Ships will leave Sri Lanka on 23rd May 2016.
