Navy renders assistance to reopen an abandoned school in Baththalangunduwa Island
The officers of the Northwestern Naval Command extended their fullest contribution to reopen an abandoned school located in the Island of Baththalangunduwa in Kalpitiya. Accordingly the school was once again made available for the benefit of the children in the area since 11th May 2016. As per the directives of Commander Northwestern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Niraja Attygallle, an awareness programme was held for all the parents of school children, highlighting the importance of education in the contemporary society. Subsequently the navy attached a Graduate-Naval Instructor who was enlisted under special scheme, to the school on the Island and regular teaching learning process is carried out now quenching the educational thirst of the children.
There are 33 children (22 boys and 11 girls) currently studding in in the school, and further arrangements have been made to provide necessary stationary and related items in coordination with Director of Education in Kalpitiya. Besides, the Northwestern Naval Command will continue to help the school in every possible way realizing the value of literacy among children in the area. The Manager of Peoples’ Bank in Puttalam too gave his consent for the development of the school.
