Navy arrests ten local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing using banned fishing nets

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Buwaneka in Nachchikuda, apprehended 10 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing in two separate incidents yesterday (11). Accordingly 2 persons were apprehended for engaging in illegal fishing using monofilament nets in the seas West of Vedithalathivu and another 8 fishermen who were fishing in the seas West of Iranathivu using Monofilament Nets were arrested. During the arrest the Navy took 4 Fiber Glass Dinghies and 7 monofilament nets into custody.

The arrested persons and the items were produced to the Assistant Inspector of Fisheries in Mannar for further investigations.
