Navy apprehends seven local fishermen engaged in illegal fishing
Naval personnel apprehended 7 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities in two separate incidents. Accordingly, naval troops attached to SLNS Buwaneka in Nachchikuda belonging to the North Central Naval Command, arrested 5 persons engaged in illegal fishing in the sea area west of Illuppukadawai and Vedithalativu yesterday (25). Along with the suspects a dinghy, a canoe, 4 banned nets, a GPS unit, 75 galvanized pipes used for fishing and 40 kg of crab were also taken into custody. The arrested persons and belongings were handed over to the Inspectorate of Fisheries in Mannar for further investigations.
Further, two more persons engaged in illegal fishing activities using a banned fishing net in the seas off Navathkuda on 24th April 2016, were apprehended by the naval personnel attached to Naval Sub Unit in Batticaloa Fort of Eastern Naval Command. The arrested persons along with the items were handed over to the Police in Batticaloa for onward legal action.
