Navy assists to protect mangrove environment
Under the visionary concept of Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, another two phases of the mangrove plantation project, in view of stopping sea erosion, were held in Northern and North Central Commands. Under the precedence of the Commander Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva, 1000 mangrove plants were grown in the beach area close to the jetty in the Kytes Island. The Divisional Secretary of Velani, government officials, teachers and students representing the schools and number of residents in the area participated in the event.
Meanwhile with the able guidance of the Deputy Area Commander of North Central Naval Command, Commodore Upul De Silva, 3500 mangrove plants were grown in the Vedithalativu lagoon area. This magnanimous exercise was well supported by the Federation of Sri Lanka Small Fisheries and the residents of the area. Further, the officials of World Food Programme, Coastal Conservation Department, the Commanding Officer of SLNS Buwaneka, and naval personnel of SLNS Thammanna, Gajaba, Pussadeva and many residents were also present at the event.
