Northern Naval Command conducts a field health clinic in Karainagar
The Northern Naval Command in collaboration with the State Pharmaceutical Corporation conducted a field health clinic at the Dr. Thiagaraja Central College in Karainagar on 07th November 2015, under the patronage of the Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva .
A volunteer team of doctors from the Jaffna Teaching Hospital including a consultant physician and a consultant eye surgeon, doctors of the Kayts base hospital, dental and mobile laboratory staff of the Ministry of Health, members of the Cancer Screening Unit, the Eye Mobile Unit, Non Communicable Disease Screening Unit and the SPC extended their support to make the event successful. The Regional Director General of Health-Jaffna, the Director of the Teaching Hospital of Jaffna, staff of the SPC and naval personnel in the area were also present on the occasion.
Health screening, for school children, communicable disease screening with laboratory tests, early detection of cancer and well woman/well baby clinics were conducted at this endeavour along with family care, specialized care and eye treatments.
More than 1,320 patients were treated providing laboratory tests and medicine during the clinic. Nutrition supplements were also given free of charge. In addition, 500 dry ration packs and 200 packs of stationery items were distributed among the needy families and school children. Food supplements were also provided to the school children in the area.
The residents of Karainagar, Madagal, Kayts, Anlathivu, Eluwativu and other islands of the Jaffna peninsula who attended the clinic expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Sri Lanka Navy for facilitating them to receive their much awaited medical care. The Navy’s community development and welfare programmes focus on the enhancement of ethnic harmony and social wellbeing of all communities for a prosperous and peaceful coexistence. The Field Medical Clinic Programme initiated by the present Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, when he was serving as the Area Commander of the Northern Naval Area during 2010-2012 has been able to provide community members of the Jaffna peninsula with medical care at locations most convenient to them.
