Navy rescues Sri Lankan fishermen in distress
The Sri Lanka Navy rescued six local fishermen onboard a multi-day fishing trawler “Suranga” drifting 405 km (225 nautical miles) East of Trincomalee due to an engine failure.
Promptly responding to the request made by Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Sri Lanka Navy dispatched Sri Lanka Naval Ship “Shakthi” patrolling in Northern seas to assist the trawler in distress on 21st August 2015.
Upon arrival, the ship’s crew extended technical assistance, and since the attempt was unsuccessful, the trawler was brought safely to Trincomalee harbour amidst rough sea conditions on 25th August 2015 after 48 hours of towing.
