Commander of the Navy pays tribute to naval war heroes
The newly-appointed Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne paid tribute to naval war heroes at the Naval War Hero Memorial at the Welisara Naval Complex on 13th July 2015. He laid a flower wreath honouring the supreme sacrifices made by the heroic naval personnel for the preservation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country. Two minutes’ silence was also observed in honour of the war heroes and the Last Post was played in tribute to their noble sacrifices.
Having taken command of the SLN, which played a pivotal role in defeating a ruthless terrorism that had plagued the island-nation for over three decades, the new Commander of the Navy made paying tribute to all heroic naval personnel Killed In Action, Missing In Action and Wounded In Action his first priority. As a war veteran, who had led the men under his command to many victories, Vice Admiral Wijegunaratne knew first-hand how true bravery and unflinching heroism had paved the way for the lasting peace in the country. He remembered all heroic naval personnel with the highest gratitude and saluted them for the noble sacrifices made by putting the country before self.
The Commander Western Naval Area Rear Admiral Dayananda Nanayakkara, senior naval officers attached to the Naval Headquarters and the Western Naval Command were also present on the occasion.
