Navy takes hold of over 1111kg of smuggled Kendu Leaves in Kalpitiya

The Navy seized over 1111kg of smuggled Kendu Leaves during a special search operation carried out at Kandakuda Junction in Kalpitiya on the night of 02nd March 2023. The search also led to apprehend a tipper truck that was prepared to transfer the consignment of Kendu Leaves.

The Navy often conducts patrols and search operation in coastal and sea areas of the island, to ward off the influx of contraband through sea routes.

In a similar effort, the search operation was carried out by SLNS Vijaya in the Northwestern Naval Command with a group of Navy Marine and Intelligence personnel attached to SLNS Vijaya. During the search in Kandakuda Junction on 02nd March, naval personnel searched a suspicious tipper truck at the locality and found 35 packages of Kendu Leaves loaded into the vehicle. The consignment of seized Kendu Leaves weighed about 1111kg and 870g.

Meanwhile, the tipper truck and the stock of Kendu Leaves seized in this search operation were handed over to the Kalpitiya Police for onward legal action.
