Navy seizes Kerala cannabis in northern waters
The Navy took hold of about 30kg (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis floating off the Kachchativu Island on 18th July 2022. The seizure was made during a special operation conducted by the Navy to chase away Indian poaching trawlers in Sri Lankan waters.
The Fast Attack Craft P 412 of the 04th Fast Attack Flotilla in the Northern Naval Command on 18th July carried out a special operation to chase away Indian poaching vessels in island’s waters. During the operation the Navy took hold of this stock of Kerala cannabis in 09 packages, weighing about 30kg (wet weight) floating near the Kachchativu Island.
It is suspected that the smugglers might have abandoned the stock of narcotics, being unable to bring them ashore due to the presence of the Navy. The gross street value of seized Kerala cannabis is believed to be around Rs.9 million.
The stock of cannabis has been kept in naval custody until it is produced for onward legal proceedings.
