Navy assists to apprehend six persons with illegal drugs
Even under the disastrous situation in the country, many anti drug operations to prevent drug smuggling activities across the seas and over the land are being conducted by SL Navy which is contributing in the national effort of wiping out the drug menace from the island. Accordingly, during 03 operations carried out by SL Navy in Southern and Eastern Naval areas, six (06) persons with illegal drugs, were apprehended on 20th April 2020.
Accordingly, during a search operation conducted by a team of naval personnel attached to the Southern Naval Command in coordination with Police STF-Pattipola, at Kudawella fisheries harbour in Matara, a suspicious person had been searched and 70g of cannabis in his possession was recovered. The amount of cannabis and the 25 years old suspect who was a resident of Ambalanthota area, were taken into custody.
Approximately 51g of cannabis and 40 Nos. of banned drug tablets were recovered in the possession of three persons during a search of their two motor bikes at a road block manned by Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command in coordination with SL Army and Police personnel of Yan Oya Police post. These 03 suspects are residents of Pulmude and Erakkandi areas, aged 21 – 28. Meanwhile, 02 persons who were travelling in a three wheeler across Salpeuaru area, were searched by Navy combined with Kuchchaweli Police and recovered 60g of cannabis. Two suspects are residents of Trincomalee area aged 41 and 33. By these two operations, 05 suspects, drugs possessed by them, two motor bikes and a three wheeler were apprehended.
Further investigations on above 03 incidents are conducted by Tangalle, Pulmude and Kuchchaweli Police stations respectively.
