Navy seizes approximately 76kg of Kerala cannabis
Sri Lanka Navy seized approximately 76kg (in wet weight) of Kerala cannabis adrift, during a special search operation conducted in seas north of Thalaimannar Lighthouse, on 22nd March 2020.
The Navy has been conducting regular anti-drug operations in the territorial waters of the island to curb drugs being smuggled via sea route. Accordingly, naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command carried out a special patrol in seas north of Thalaimannar Lighthouse today and spotted 01 suspicious parcel floating in waters. During further search, approximately 76kg (in wet weight) of Kerala cannabis was found in 16 small packages and they were taken into naval custody.
It is believed that this stock of Kerala cannabis might have been left behind in fear of continuous naval patrols in this sea area. The recovered stock of Kerala cannabis was handed over to Mulankavil Police for onward investigation.
